Educating the Home-School Market via Clean, Clear Design

A review on the design of information graphical chart for Institute for Excellence in Writing

The Institute for Excellence in Writing's (IEW) mission is to "address issues relating to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity, insight, practical experience, and humor." The organization offers an extensive line of products to the homeschool market via a direct-mail print and web magalog, as well as their online store.

IEW Chart Design

Central Creative Group recently provided design and production services to IEW, completing their 2011 “Arts of Language” magalog in early February. The base project included design of the magalog’s cover, revising typography, refreshing running headline elements, and overall production of the 32 page magalog.

The challenge facing IEW in 2011, and that given to CCG, is one of educating their expanding client base on the optimal use of their product line - which is also expanding. IEW’s customer base homeschools children of all ages, and even though products are coded for grade-level, help was needed to clarify product progression.

In response to this challenge, CCG used design to clarify product purchasing decisions. An infographic was developed showing how one might progress through the IEW product line over the course of a child’s education. Some of the steps in the design process are shown in the photos provided.

To start the design process, we concepted several different configurations to show the flow of information and levels. Once we settled on the stair step and ladder layout we went to the computer to further explore the design.

The image on the left is the first draft ever shown to the client. With their approval we went on to finnesse the design and added the visual of the ladders going up to the path, shown in the design on the right.

The final infographic, titled “Pathway to Excellence in Thinking, Speaking and Writing”, utilizes a staircase metaphor to lead IEW customers through the “ideal” product progression from Kindergarten to 12th grade. If a customer has children that come into the program later in their primary education years, the infographic provides a visual “ladder” showing how they might catch back up to the “ideal” path.

The final printed piece includes the IEW colors for grade level distinction. A dashed line was added to further emphasize the ladder visual. Minimal copy introduces the chart and to help the users find where to begin.
